Songs of Love & Devotion

Mar 302012

We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord.

We bow only to God, and we stand by our word.

And we pray that our unity may this day be restored.

And they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love, by our love,

And they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love.

In the home of the brave and the land of the free,

The body of the Khalsa shall rise up for all to see.

And to the True Guru shall go the victory.

And they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love, by our love,

Yes, they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love.

Yes, they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love.

Yes, they’ll know that we are Khalsa by our love.

(Translated by Inder Mohan Singh and Simran Kaur)

too meraa pitaa, too hai meraa maataa

too meraa bandhap, too meraa bhraataa

too meraa raakhaa sabhnee thaaee

            taa bhau kehaa kahraa jeeo

You are my father, You are my mother

You are my friend and You are my brother

You always watch over me wherever I go

Why then should I have any fear?

Getting to know You – this is Your gift

You are my comfort, You are my honor

There is no other besides Yourself

All the world is a playground of Yours.

You are my father, You are my mother …

Myriads of beings are all Your creation

Living their lives under Your direction

All that happens, You are the doer

By ourselves, we have no power

You are my father, You are my mother …

My greatest joy is chanting Your Naam

Singing Your glory … peace in my heart

Satnaam Vaheguroo, Satnaam Vaheguroo

Vaheguroo, Vaheguroo, Vaheguroo, Vaheguroo

My greatest joy is chanting Your Naam

Singing Your glory … peace in my heart

My perfect Guru has given his blessing

Nanak has won the battle of life.

You are my father, You are my mother …

too meraa pitaa, too hai meraa maataa …

Many speak of courage, speaking can not give it.

It’s in the face of death, we must live it.

When things are down and darkest, that’s when we stand tallest.

Until the last star falls, we won’t give an inch at all.

Chorus:

Stand as the Khalsa, strong as steel, steady as stone,

give our lives to God and Guru, mind and soul, breath and bone.

Guru Arjan gave his life to stand for what was right.

He was burned and tortured for five long days and nights.

He could have stopped it any time just by giving in.

His strength a solid wall, he never gave an inch at all.

Chorus:

Sons of the Khalsa, remember those who died,

Stood their ground until their last breath so we who live now might live free lives.

A princess is not royal by her birth or blood inside,

But if her family’s home is Anandpur Sahib,

She’ll walk with such a grace and strength,

The world will bow in awe,

Until the mountains fall, she’ll never give an inch at all.

Chorus:

Daughters of the Khalsa, in your strength our future lies.

Give our children fearless minds to see the world through the Guru’s eyes.

Baisakhi day we were thousands, but only five had the courage for dying.

Then one brave man, one flashing sword, he turned us all to lions.

And now we live his legacy, to die before we fall.

And like the five who answered his call, we can’t turn back at all.

Chorus:

Stand as the Khalsa, strong as steel, steady as stone,

Give our lives to God and Guru, mind and soul, breath and bone.

The tenth guru gave even his sons to give the Khalsa life.

And his words stand like mountains against the winds of time.

That Khalsa will rule the world, all will be safe in its fold.

But if the Khalsa falls, there won’t be a world at all.

Chorus:

Stand as the Khalsa, strong as steel, steady as stone,

give our lives to God and Guru, mind and soul, breath and bone.

Sons of the Khalsa, remember those who died,

stood their ground until their last breath so we who live now might live free lives.

Daughters of the Khalsa, in your strength our future lies.  Give our children fearless minds to see the world through the Guru’s eyes.

Stand as the Khalsa, strong as steel, steady as stone,

Give our lives to God and Guru, mind and soul, breath and bone.

Mind and soul are his alone.

Translation by Raman Singh
My Guru, I long for you, for your Darshan

As the song-bird thirsts, for the nectar of Your Naam

My thirst remains unquenched, I can have no peace

Until I see my Guru, and His beloved Sikhs!

I give myself, and my soul

For your Darshan, my beloved Guru!

Your face, is beautiful, and your Shabad Divine

It has been too long, ere I saw you last time

Blessed is the land, where you live true

My friend and loved one – my true Guru!

I give myself, and my soul

To my intimate, my Divine Guru!

An instant, away from You, brings darkness

When will I meet You, my beloved Waheguru

I can’t endure this night, sleep eludes me too

Until I see Your True Court, my beloved Guru!

I give myself, and my soul

To your True Court, my beloved Guru!

His Grace has shown me, my Saint Guru

Thus I found the Lord – immortal in my home

I will always serve You, never away from God

Guru Nanak says- I’m your slave, my beloved Lord!

I give myself, and my soul

Guru Nanak lives to serve the Lord!

Chanting Sat Nam

Guru Nanak gave us the Word

Echoing through this earth to be heard

Guru Gobind Singh gave us the sword

To protect the weak from the merciless foe

Chorus: Chanting Sat Nam, Singing Sat Nam, Chanting Sat Nam

Guru Ram Das built a Temple of gold

Golden marble in the eyes of the soul

Strength to the fearful in the home of the brave

In Grace united, praising God’s holy Name

Born into this world from the universal womb

O. Divine Mother, lantern of Truth

That each lady is a Goddess on this earth

In Grace united, praising God’s holy Name

From the light came the beginning, this is the age of the True Guru
From the light came the beginning, this is the age of the True Guru

CHORUS
Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh
Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh

1]  Guru Nanak came into this land
To preach One God for all of man
He sang a song of love and ecstacy
To bring men’s hearts into harmony

2]    Baba Nanak found one disciple true
Bhai Lehna became the guru
Guru Angad was a man of selflessness
He grew in love through righteousness

3]    Guru Amar Das- spread equality
All who came to see him ate in unity
Leave behind your grandeur, leave behind your schemes
Come live life’s ultimate dream

4]    If you chant the name of the fourth Guru
The virtue of grace will be found in you
Guru Ram Das said can’t you see
The only way to God is humility

5]    When you chant the hymns of the fifth Guru
The pearl of peace will belong to you
Guru Arjan Dev wrote the Sukhmani
So man could sing of infinity

6]    Guru Hargobind wore two gleaming swords
To be both temporal and spiritual Lord
Internally a hermit, externally a king
To fight for righteousness is God’s thing

7]    Guru Har Rai was a gentle man
He walked with grace throughout God’s land
He spent his days in meditation long
The love of the Lord was his life’s song

8]    If you chant the name of the eighth Guru
Pain and sorrow shall depart from you
Guru Harkrishan gave his life to the plague
So thousands of lives could be saved

9]    When you call the name of the ninth Gur
The nine treasures will run to you
Guru Teg Bahadur gave his head to the king
In order to usher in the age of the SINGH

10]  Guru Gobind Singh said “I need a head”
And brandished his naked steel
Guru Gobind Singh said “Give me a head”
A thousand people took to their heels

11]    Guru Gobind Singh believed in the trinity
Hospitality, the sword, and victory
Guru Gobind Singh believed in the trinity
Deg  Teg  ki  Fateh!

12]    Think of the light of the ten Gurus
The Word of God, the Truth of truths
Meditate on Siri Guru Granth Sahib
And all of your sufferings shall be relieved

He wont let them face difficult times

He loves His devotees – it’s His way.

Giving His hand, protecting them

With every breath he nurtures them

with every breath he cherishes them

My mind’s captivated by Him

My heart, my soul belongs to Him

In the beginning, in the end

Day and night, constantly

My Friend is always there for me

My fascinating, wonderful Lord.

Seeing Him, I am in ecstasy

By meditating on the Lord

(Guru) Nanak’s attained everlasting joy

The omnipresent One keeps my honor alive.

=======

(original fr Roma)

The Lord looks after his followers

They don’t go through difficult times

With His hand, he protects them

With every breath he nurtures them

with every breath he cherishes them

My mind’s captivated by Him

He is always there with me

O my friend, you are my real wealth and treasure

The Lord’s miraculously great

On seeing this, I’m in ecstasy

By meditating on the Lord

(Guru) Nanak’s attained everlasting joy

The omnipresent One has kept  my honor alive.

(Translated by Inder M. Singh, based on Nitnem by Swami Rama)

Raag Raamkalee Mahallaa Teejaa, Anand
Ik Ongkaar Satgur Prasaad

1
The Lord is Supreme, One and Alone.
By the grace of the true Guru, can He be kno                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ared his Light.

2
O inner spirit, hold the Lord close forever.
The bondage of all pain, His touch will sever.

The Lord will shelter you and be your guide;
For all your needs He Himself will provide.

The Lord is powerful in every way,
Why should you forget the Lord to obey?

Nanak says: O my soul, remain still and awed,
Always and  forever feel the presence of God.

3
In Your house, my Lord, all things are complete;
Upon receiving Your gift, one’s life is replete.

The Lord’s Name will resound deep in your heart;
Singing God’s melody will be your part.

Let your heart be filled with the Lord’s praise.
To the greatest heights, your consciousness raise.

Nanak says: Is there anything that can compete?
In Your house, my Lord, all things are complete;

4
The Lord’s Name shelters and guides my life;
Fulfilling all needs, it ends all strife.

Your Divine Naam resounds in my mind;
It stills all desires, and brings peace sublime.

Peace and light I experience through the holy Name;
I am devoted to the One who is always the Same.

Nanak says Love the Name with deep devotion.
Your Name guides my way on life’s stormy ocean.
5
For those in whose heart the Lord constantly dwells,
Ring the heavenly sounds – divine music and bells.

The Name of the Lord is heard with delight
By the chosen, in love with the Lord and His Light.

The Lord gives strength to still all desires
And the fear of death that the mind acquires.

Those who are blessed by the Lord Divine
Are deeply absorbed in Him in their minds.

Nanak says the fortunate are granted the Name
They hear in their hearts, the divine refrain.

(40, The Final Verse)

O fortunate listener, let this song inspire
And still the waves of your mind’s desire.

Through this song of joy the Lord is attained,
All sorrow and sadness forever restrained.

I’m absorbed in the name that I now cherish;
My grief, distress, and regrets shall perish.

Blessed are the saintly, God’s Name they embrace
Filled with joy and bliss through the Guru’s grace.

Those who repeat the Lord’s Name in their mind
Are pure and serene, their actions are refined.

When the Guru to them His grace imparts
The Lord will inhabit and guide their hearts.

Nanak says the blissful sound of sublime emotion
Is heard by the seeker of love and devotion.

Ik oankaar Waaheguroo jee kee fateh,

Sree Bhagauti Ji Sahaae.

Vaar Sri Bhagauti Jee kee Paatshaahee Dasvee(n)

After first contemplating the Primal Power of the Almighty, call to mind Guru Nanak.

Then think lovingly of Guru Angad, Guru Amar Daas and Guru Raam Daas, may they watch over us.

Meditate in remembrance upon Guru Arjun, Guru Hargobind and Siri Har Rai.

Reflect upon Guru Har Krishan, seeing whom all sufferings shall depart.

Meditate in remembrance upon Guru Tayg Bahadar, and the nine treasures shall hasten to your home. May they protect and help us everywhere.

And the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh Jee, father of the Khalsa who has blessed us with the gift of Amrit – may we enjoy his protection everywhere.

The Light of the Ten Gurus, the Living Guru, the Word of God, the Truth of Truths, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib; contemplating Its divine darshan, Khalsa Jee Sahib, Bolo Jee, “SIRI WAAHAY GUROO!”

Let us lovingly remember the Panj Piaaray; the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh; the forty liberated ones; those who have meditated upon the Naam, and shared with others in need, without thought of reward. Those who held firm to their faith in the face of adversity and hardship. Those who have defended the weak and oppressed. Those who saw the faults in others, but overlooked those faults, and instead saw the Spirit of God in all people. Thinking of their deeds,

Khalsa Jee Sahib, Bolo Jee, “SIRI WAAHAY GUROO!”

Let us remember all those Sikh men and women who, for the sake of the Dharma, and the religious and spiritual freedom of all people, stood up to the worst kinds of torture and gave their lives, but never gave up their faith, and their determination to live according to the Sikh rehat, with all their hair, to their last breath. Remembering their sacrifice, and their glorious victory,

Khalsa Jee Sahib, Bolo Jee, “SIRI WAAHAY GUROO!”

May the primary prayer of the Khalsa be to always hold in the heart

WAHAY GUROO, WAAHAY GUROO, WAAHAY GUROO.”

As we think of Him, so may we be blessed. May God’s Grace and Protection extend to all bodies of the Khalsa, wherever they may be. May God’s Glory be fulfilled, and may His Sweet Will prevail. May we achieve Victory through the Charity of Brotherhood and the Sword of Righteousness. Dayg, Tayg, Fateh!. May the Khalsa triumph and prevail forever

Khalsa Jee Sahib, Bolo Jee, “SIRI WAAHAY GUROO!”

May the minds of the Sikhs be humble, but their wisdom be profound; may You Yourself be the keeper of our wisdom, O Wahegurujee. Grant to Your Sikhs the Gift of Sikh Dharma, the Gift of Your Naam, the gift of long and uncut hair, the Gift of Faith, of confidence in You, the gift of wisdom and discernment, the Gift of reading and understanding the Word of Your Bani. Grant us the Blessing of bathing in the Nectar pool of the Harimandir Sahib. May the Sikhs be united in love and brotherhood.

Khalsa Jee Sahib, Bolo Jee, “SIRI WAAHAY GUROO!”

Waheguruji, Honor of the humble, Strength of the weak, Shelter of the shelterless, we offer this prayer in Your Presence; by Your Grace we are gathered together this day, to sing Your Sweet Bani, to hear your life-giving Word, and speak of Your Manifold Blessings. May these things find a loving place within our hearts, and serve to draw our souls ever closer to You. Please bless this service that we may continue in this effort to gather and practice the Guru’s Word in this land so far from our roots.

[****** add any other special prayers here *******]

Please [bless us with the Holy Word of Your Hukam]. Inspire us to walk on the path of Gurmat shown to us by You through the Holy Word of Gurbaanee. Please forgive us our many sins, our errors and omissions, and help us, that we may keep ourselves pure, in the face of the challenges and temptations of the world. Bless us with the company of only people of love, so that we may remember Your Naam in their presence.

Through the gift of the Naam given to us by Naanak, may we always remain in Chardi Kalaa. Within Your will, we pray for the welfare of all humanity,.

Naanak naam charhdee kalaa, Tayray bhaanay sarbatt ka bhalaa

Waahay guroo jee kaa khaalsaa, Waahay guroo jee kee fateh!!!

Aagyaa Bhaee Akaal kee …..

Waahay guroo jee kaa khaalsaa, Waahay guroo jee kee fateh!!!

Bolay so nihaal ! Sat siri akaal !!!
