The Pursuit of Happiness (Inder Mohan Singh)
Abstract
We spend our lives pursuing whatever we believe will make us happy – wealth, success, popularity, excitement or whatever, but even if we achieve any of these, we find that the pleasure is fleeting, and we still remain unsatisfied. Meanwhile, we find many reasons for unhappiness and suffering.
We will look at what Gurbani has to say about achieving a deeper and more lasting happiness and how to apply it in our lives.
This is intended to be more a conversation than a lecture, so please come prepared to share your thoughts.

Inculcating Naam Aadhaar one invites happiness
In Sikhee there several pillars such as Naam (Waheguru), Guru, and Sabd (Gurbanee). Guru Amar Das has brought out the significance of all three by linking them together in the following pauri in Anand Sahib:-
ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਭੁਖਾ ਸਭਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ॥ (Raag Raamkali M. 3, GGS. 917).
Saachaa Naam Maeraa Aadhhaaro || Saach Naam Adhhaar Maeraa Jin Bhukhaa Sabh Gavaaeeaa ||
The True Name is my only support. The True Name is my only support; it satisfies all hunger.
ਕਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਛਾ ਸਭਿ ਪੁਜਾਈਆ ॥
Kar Saanth Sukh Man Aae Vasiaa Jin Eishhaa Sabh Pujaaeeaa ||
It has brought peace and tranquility to my mind; it has fulfilled all my desires.
ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਦੀਆ ਏਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥
Sadhaa Kurabaan Keethaa Guroo Vittahu Jis Dheeaa Eaehi Vaddiaaeeaa ||
I am forever a sacrifice to the Guru, who possesses such glorious greatness.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਰਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥
Kehai Naanak Sunahu Santhahu Sabadh Dhharahu Piaaro ||
Says Nanak, listen, O Saints; enshrine love for the Shabad.
ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥੪॥
Saachaa Naam Maeraa Aadhhaaro ||4||
