The best part of being Sikh is knowing you are apart of something special. To know that you have a purpose and to feel blessed. Strength comes from our ability to believe, to procure our faith. Being a Sikh is like finding your soul. Honor and liberty to a Sikh is like oxygen to living. We breathe equality and freedom. If that's not enough look at how beautiful some of these sadarnis are :)

Sikhism is the only religion which states that Women have equal right as men do.

Sikhism only Says that There are millions of other planet in our universe. (It was before gallelo or others)

Sikhism is the only religion that doesn't apply caste system.

Yet Sikhism doesn't say that Sikhism is the only religion in this world. It states ONE GOD MANY FAITHS

Being Sikh, I had fortunately chance to study Guru Granth Sahib, which is the best source & guide for spirituality.

Comments

I feel very blessed being born in a Sikh family as Sikhism seems the most practical and ideal religion leading to spirituality without rituals. It is based on equality and respect to other faiths. Our Guru Granth Sahib is truely a treasure of profound spiritual knowledge. If we (Sikhs appearing externally, which is not so difficult) practice `sikhi' internally also, with Waheguruji's mehar, Sikhism will prevail universally. All good persons would like to follow it. I have read the views of Other Sikhs on this page and i agree and disagree with some of the views. The response by MMakhan Bassi is disgusting and is definately not true. We should all behave as one, after all we are Sikhs. You cannot get through life with Goray telling us what to do, we must be independant. We are Sikhs

The coolest thing about being a sikh( wearing turban only),I have not found yet.The i find it, i 'll definitely paste it here. Well, most of you r out of Punjab ,so I would comment that " dooor de dhol suhaavne lagde hann ." Out side Punjab u miss your culture & community. So u adopt sikhism here abroad. But in Punjab, the birthplace ( also homeland)of Sikhism, Jatt sikh youth do not like to be sikhs( ie to have hair) so almost 80% ( may be more than this %age, but not less than this, i can bet). And I respect Bhapa sikhs a lot who never cut their hair (because they have the true sikhi in their hearts)& about jatt sikhs ( poor fellows, illiterate or semi-literate ie 10 th pass , +2 pass or at most BA pass with Physical Education ). You may visit Punjab & see with your own eyes & u will feel very sad in which direction jatt sikh youth is going , ( towards drugs, narrow-mindedness, womanising, pornography inferiority complex ,broken self confidence, unemployeed crime & depression ) u can not do anything for them I repeat, u can not do anything for them .!!!! They (Jatts)took pride of being of Higher cast and they r suffering bacause of this ) when their girls run away from home with others .

What u can do for them .

So be Cool , cool enough not to look into these matters , problems facing the Jatt sikh community , which makes the highest %age og sikhs in the world ( around 60% alone )

So be cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 a sad ex-sikh

Their are a number of great thing about being a Sikh. You are almost instantaneosly recognized out of a thousand people. (this may not be good, if you're trying to hide from someone) You get to look different instead of the average Joe Blow. You get to choose different colors of Pug's to wear on a daily basis.(this is always the highlight of my day (jk) You get to wear a Kara, which always reminds you about your culture and helps lead you in the right path. You get to marry the most beautiful girls in the world(Sardarni's)-ok so I got the most beautiful one, maybe the second most. Getting more respect that any one else. By wearing a Pug, you get alot of respect, far more than any other culture. I could go on and on, but I'll save it for when I have more time. Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh!

WEaring a Turban!!!. FOr all you 'sikhs' out there who believe that by cutting your hair you are "cool" and more attractive, I have one thing to say - You are soooooo mis-informed. I think the fundamental problem with todays youth is an extreme lack of self-esteem, coupled with an indefatigable desire to 'fit-in". Personally, i have a beautiful 'western' (although i HATE classifying people into ANY Category)girlfriend whom i have loved for 3years and will eventually (god willing) marry. We met in a local nightclub, and she expressly stated she loved me for my religion, self esteem, PERSONALITY, and (not to mention) beautiful looks (via turban). Therefore, despite a Turban and a recalcitrant adherence to the Khalsa Path I have Achieved More REspect and Personal satisfaction than those NUMEROUS Un-orthodox sikhs who to this day are Struggling with Low self esteem / loss of identity. Why can't they realise that PERSONALITY ULTIMATELY PREVAILS and that instead of Treating the TURBAN as an Encumbrance - Treat it as an ASSET!!!.

My history. We come from a proud, warrior, yet humble and hard-working ancestory. Our forefathers tilled the land, and when needed, said a prayer and picked up their swords to fight ANY injustice. Our people have triumphed under hard conditions, and the one the RSS and the so called Indian Government have created will one day push us to the edge and we will triump once more. I once read of a Singh that was tortured for days by the government, finally, he was asked by RSS agents, "Why do you refuse to give us the answers we ask?" His reply, not only shocked me, but changed me. With the energy he had, he said "Go to Amritsar, and dig into the ground. There you will find Roman coins, Islamic and Mughal coins, and Indian coins. They have come, and they have gone. We are here to stay." I would like to end this message with a quote...

"The rope of the gallows is dear to us like the embrace of our Lover, but if we are condemned to be prisoners of war, we will wish the bullets to kiss the truth lurking in our breasts so that the sacred ground of Khalistan becomes more fertile with our warm blood. Long live Khalistan!" -Sukha and Jinda

The sikh religon had the potential to become one of the world's greatest religon. No - not just a religon - a way of life, a society, a political system, a nation hood, the very essence of cohesion in human terms.

It has become a bastardised version of what it was meant to be.

Justice, equality, freedom, and abandonment of superstitions and false idol worship.

Almost every sikh in the world must have one or more pictures of the guru's in their house, you all give money at the gurdwara, you think eating meat, especailly beef is gainst your religon. Why, because once again sikh are cowtowing to the Brahmin Hindu spoutings of superstition and idol worship - not eating meat on Tuesdays !! have you heard such crap.

The sikh's self image bears little resemblance to reality. The spirit of one upmanship has been replaced by empty boombast and plain greed.

Devotion religion has given way to the display of religiosity.

The Khalsa way of life, the way of the saint - solider has declined into meaningless ritual

Akand Paths through hired granthis, and teh worship of the Granth as though it were an idol has replaced it as the study of hymnal philospophy to give guidance to the individual, family and society as a whole .

Keerten by profressional ragis demanding high fees as though they were film playback singers.

Of course ragis and granthis have perpetuated these practices as they have a vested interest.

Despite claims of equality and no caste - discrimination against low caste sikhs, women and other creeds is just as prolific as in Hindus.

The mesage of goodwill to all Mankind enshrined in the Granth has been reduced to a litany to be chanted on ceremonial occasions.

Gurus Gobind Singh's exhortation " Draw the sword after all other means of righting a wrong have failed" is honoured more in breach, and by gangsters and thugs who think they are very brave "Soormey" saint Soliderswho haul out innocent , unarmed people from buses and shoot them.

And lets not forget the uneducated half wit Hindu Baiter Bhindranwale, who became a martyred hero for the lumpen, narrow minded dregs of Sikh society.

Now a true Khalsa makes up 0.25 % of the global Sikh community.

Alas, The gurus are now long dead, The true Khalsa is dead, and the sikh religon is dead.

I think that the coolest thing about being a Sikh is that we are a proud people. We struggled for our rights here in North America. In addition we still retained our culture, language, customs, and most importantly our religion. Sikhs also retain strong ties with the homeland-Punjab, India.

However, what is problematic is the constant use of violence to solve disputes amongst both adults and youth in the Sikh community-its epidemic-just read the newspapers in B.C., Canada. It has never stopped to this day. There is a lack of guidance by parents, and the younger generation, whether they want to hear it or not, are lost. People have forgotten our struggle and about the Sikh pioneers who came here and worked hard and who were honest and loyal.

Also, the temple officials, particularly in Vancouver and Surrey, B.C., Canada are generally corrupt and dishonest. They have actually taken the Gurdwaras away from the general population and have dishonestly profitted from donations. They are much like the corrupt temple officials in India back in the late 1800's and early 1900's who were greedy. Unfortunately, the youth are not given access to the temples, which are instead controlled by cliques of arrogant men and women who proclaim and profess the Sikh faith in the public but practice greed and nepotism in the background.

I know people in our community are offended by this commentary but they need to learn how to listen and start accepting some responsibility.

Being a sikh means to obey Guru Granth Sahib which contains the teaching of Gurus and other enlightened souls. A Sikh knows that everything and everyone is made by the almighty one true form and it dosn't matter what name he is given. Unfortunately reading some of the comments on this board by those that call themselves Sikhs obviousley don't know this otherwise wouldn't they know that they are abusing the creator when they abuse others and do you think he will be pleased with them? I don't think so what do the individuals think? Remember the word Sikh means to seek and all humanity is seeking the "Truth." However Sikhism has given all the answers in the Guru Granth Sahib and it is up to each and everyone to choose whether to accept or disregard them and so become either a Gurmukh or a Manmukh. Simple isn't it? A Sikh prays for "Sarbat Ka Bhalla" meaning everyones well being not just for a particular religion sect creed or colour tell me of another religion that prays for all of humanity? Be proud that you are a Sikh and pray that you can obey all that the Guru Granth Sahib teaches.

Comments

Guru Gobind Singh sacrificed his whole family for us but it saddens me when I see sikhs thinking they are so cool with their half shaven beards and moustaches and copying the western culture. How can you call yourselves Sikhs? You should bury your head in shame. If you read our history you will come across martyrs who were prepared to give their lives rather than cut their hair or give up sikhism. Don't think long hair and beard is only for sikhs. Both will be foundin all major religions. Guru Gobind Singh was the one who finally made it one of the five symbols when he created the Khalsa in Gods image. He gave the name Singh for all men and Kaur for all women. Sadly here we are now disregarding Singh and using our caste names and women using Singh instead of Kaur Don't you think Guru Gobind Singh could have used his caste name if he wanted to and given women the same surname as men.No men were to be lionhearted and women Princesses to be treated with respect and honour. But we think we know better than Guru Ji because we are "Modern" How dare we, we are slapping him in the face and saying we don't care about your sacrifices and why you created the Khalsa. Things are different now and we are educated and much cleverer. Take a moment and think. What has changed How can the truth and fundamentals of life change what was true then is true now. There is one God He was True He is True and Will be True and the Guru Granth Sahib has given us the path to reach him everything else in life is superflouse. Please everyone look at yourselves and what you are doing. If you call yourself a Sikh than you have to take the whole "package" you cannot pick and choose and expect to receive the almightys blessings. Can you? Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

THERE IS AN IMENSE AMOUNT OF ASPECTS ABOUT SIKHISM WHICH MAKE YOU REALISE THAT THE FAITH CAN NEVER BE FORFITTED FOR ANOTHER. OUR HERITAGE IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT OUR RELIGION. THE SAINT-WARRIOR TEACHINGS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND ALONG WITH THIS IS AN UNDERLYING PRINCIPLE OF EQUALITY BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN.

OUR RELIGION TEACHES US TO LOVE G-D, NOT FEAR HIM LIKE MANY OTHER RELIGIONS. HOWEVER, I FEEL THAT THIS HAS BEEN ABUSED BY SOME WHO THEN SEE THIS FAITH AS A 'EASY' RELIGION. I THINK BOOKS ARE AN EXCELLENT SOURCE FOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT OUR FAITH, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR YOUTH, INCLUDING ME. THESE TELLS US THE FACTS ABOUT OUR RELIGION AND SEPARATE OUR DESIRES (WHAT WE WANT TO HEAR, SUCH AS THINGS LIKE MEAT-EATING, ALCHOL CONSUMPTION?) AND WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL TEACHINGS OF OUR GURUS. Being a Sikh you are born with all the wisdom and perfect teacher guiding it and you are adviced about the purpose of life, how to live, think, act, lead, to be good student, what is to be done and not to be done and ultimately we are born to worship the almighty of God directly and not middle persons who claim themselves to be son of God or person who will take your prayers to him.We know all the persons who tells about God are saints but they are just ready reckoners to stop us from distraction. We have Guru(teacher) who reaches all the nook and corner of the world and one can talk to him, feel him for taking guidence when you are in confusing state of mind.He is the source through holy Guru Granth saheb, that we see God, feel him, have faith in him, love him and dont have the feeling of afraid of death `casue a true sikh have seen him who does everything according to his wish. I feel proud to leave from the younger genmeration who talk about the greatness of sikhism and not degrade other. Hindus and Sikhs are two sides of the same coin. They are one and should remain one. My grandma always took me to a gurudwara and not a temple, but after '84 riots india when I was 7, I got hit by 2 youth sikh boys, I hated sikhism for some time after that till in 89 I made a good friend whose name was Rajpal Singh Chadha.

The coolest thing about the sikh or sardars is that they have different identity. they can be recognized in millions by there turban. Another thing important or coolest what u say about the sikh is that they have a good attention towards god and they are enthusatically have a good approach towards God. Sikh , they don't preach idealism or a type of caste system . In them they all are brothers. In sikhism they preach no God, they preach their teachers known as Gurus. Sikh have a numero uno identity when they add SINGH with their name as Ramandeep Singh Matharu . This word - SINGH is which refers to a tiger . Therefore their power is not less then a tiger. Atlast i conclude Sikh are the only one in themselves.

Well a very interesting question. What strikes me to most, and many will agree, is this balance of Yodh mai and Shant Mai bani-and so spirit, that of which a true SINGH acquires from the Guru. It is this balance, i believe, which has allowed for the Khalsa to servive, even after the most bloodiest of times (many a holocost, etc). Shuster Vidaa is a clear example of the Khalsa at its finest, it is said that the Khalsa at a piont in history were so fluent in this art, that a single Khalsa was skilled enougth to be able to dance around tens of opposing worriers all weilding their weapons and such. Also the Yodh Mai has allowed the Khalsa to understand and appreciate time and certumstance. And it is this diversity to see the point of ones actions, and not to do things just for the sake of it, that has allowed for the Khalsa to inpress and capture the hearts of many person including me, and this is a small reason why i believe it is cool being a Sikh.

our values, beliefs and perspective on life.

Comments

I am dissapointed with Sikhs and especially Jats of today. They no nothing of their culture and most are idiots. The following thesis is of the way western Jat Sikhs are humiliating themselves and their religion.

First of all many of my Jat Sikh brothers will look at the title and say I have spelt jat wrong. Jatt is officially spelt as Jat, no double t. This is a common mistakes made by Jat’s. Secondly it must be noted, that being Jat, is contradictory to our predominant religion, (being Sikhism).

My aim is to form a common bond between all other Punjabi Jats over the world in order to uphold our traditional values, character traits, culture and maintain our responsibility, in our righteous place, at the forefront of every struggle for the well being of the common people, as has been done by our forefathers throughout our history.

The abolishment of the caste system in Sikh philosophy, directly opposes the division of persons, within a community, based on their social rank, occupation, or wealth accumulation, (caste). So why am I writing this article. I feel even that what it means to be a jat should not be forgotten. We have a history and philosophy which is unique and our values should be cherished.

In Punjab, as in other parts of India, people were classed by their occupation. The Jats, as a "class" of people were farmers or large land owners. It also should be known, that Jats, are considered a race of people extending from the Macedonian settlement in the North Western region of the Indian Continent, (328BC), during the conquest by Alexander the Great. Jat’s have been around before Christ and before Sikhism ever came about. The formal western definition of Jats is: "Jats, Indo-Aryan people, living mainly in the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh in north western India as well as eastern Pakistan. The Jats are tall, with light brown skin and dark eyes and hair. They are Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. Their principal occupation is farming." ("Jats," Microsoft (R) Encarta. Copyright (c) 1995 Microsoft Corporation. Copyright (c) 1995 Funk & Wagnall's Corporation)

What does it mean to be a true Jat. Even though Sikhism is against anything that upholds a caste system. Many of the underlying principles of being a Jat are: A true Jat must be honest and truthful at all times. Jats are hardworking, they are self sufficient they do not depend on others for their survival. In India, they work hard and live off the land, they value mother Earth because it gives them there livelihood. To a jat honour/ respect (izzat) is everything. Family honour, respect for ones peers. A true Jat will have Knowledge of who they are and where there roots lie. A jat conducts himself in a gentlemanly manner and dignity, he is not sarcastic or cynical. A Jat can enjoy food and his life but must remain in control of his senses all the time and never forget that it is all thanks to Waheguru. A jat will make sure, that his sisters, cousins and others, give respect and so gain respect. A true Jat is against asian girls flaunting themselves. Jat females have also become too westernised, they no longer where traditional clothes A jat will always help the poor or those in need. A jat will put others before himself, even if it means to sacrifice himself.(Qurbani) A jat will only raise arms and fight when injustice has been done, or in self defence and for the protection of the innocent. A Jat will stand up to oppressors of the weak. “Raising of the sword is pious and just, only when it is done to protect the weak from tyranny.” Quotation from: R.S.Gill, : “The true meaning of Jat”. 2001 (c). In today’s western world, it seems that the word Jat has become a negative term. (Western Jat is a general reference to young English born Jats Between 16 -22) Today when people talk about Jat’s, they are often labelled as alcoholic thugs, who cause trouble and are always ready to fight no matter the reasons. They are seen as heavy drinkers and lager louts. In todays society Jats argue between themselves over who can drink the most bottles of Bacardi and Whisky. Jats today are too busy getting pissed and fighting each other. It is true, that even in the past Jats drank and enjoyed their alcohol, but remained in control all of the time. They did not dishonour themselves when drinking. Jat’s like many other groups are becoming more, involved in drug culture. Today’s Jats have fictional notions of Punjab and What it’s like for real Jats living and farming in the Punjab. The majority of Western Jats have never been to India but think they know all, after two stiff Bacardi’s and after hearing three lines from Gurdas Maan’s “Apna Punjab”. I have seen it with my own eyes of Jats going to Punjab in their teens for the first time, their dreams are shattered when they have to face real life. Some who visit never go back. This is because they are too Western and can’t hack being a real Punjabi Jat. Many Western Jats go to their village in Punjab, thinking it is Bollywood. They are expecting to pull fit Punjabi Jatia. (Female Jats) The truth of the matter is if you look at another persons sister, daughter etc. expect to be cut up into little pieces. If the police found you chatting up a female whether she liked it or not, they would take you down the station and kick the f**k out of you and then ask your family for large sums of money as bail. Do not think you could sue them or you would beat them up, if you took them on, You might as well cancel your return ticket, it’s no good to you as dead. Western youth Jats can’t hack that people stare at you, this worries them. They find it difficult to sleep on a Manja, they can’t hack the heat, mosquitoes etc. These people who call themselves Jats or Punjbai’s can’t hack two or three weeks in the Punjab, they can’t wait to get back to England or where ever. If you end up in arguments or fights with other local Jats, who are also hot headed, you may end up in big trouble. The police in Punjab are very strict, you may think that you can do anything and bribe officers of law, but you will probably require huge sums of money to get out of big sh*t. In saying this, the police have changed, there are special task forces to root out corruption. so If you’re a student on holiday, or your visiting your uncle, then you are screwed if you do anything wrong. Honour and respect for others is a big value in the Punjab. Punjab police are well known for torturing those in their custody. DO NOT DO STUPID THINGS IN THE PUNJAB, YOU WON’T GET AWAY WITH IT. I feel if Western Jats were taken on regular visits to India, they would grow to love the Punjab, it’s heritage, culture and people. After all they are a member of this group. When they go back to the Punjab, they should feel proud that they own land, they should know where it is and how much land there is. Going back will keep their relationship with their families in Punjab strong. I am only twenty three years of age and have been back Punjab eight times. I truly love it there, I even got married there. I got married there because I believe Western Jat girls are becoming sluts, they have no respect for their, brothers, husbands and parents. They are too busy going out and getting laid. They can’t speak Punjabi properly and no nothing of their history and culture. Jat girls who are the opposite of the above statement are a rarity. When I retire, I want to move to India into my house in the Punjab and spend the rest of my days looking over the land I own. I enjoy the fresh air and he friendliness of my family and the people. Jats today in the western world are seen as lazy, uneducated trouble causers. This it seems is a very negative image of Jat’s but in today’s Britain it is a reality. There are very few true jats left who uphold the honour and heritage of what it truly means to be a Jat. It is very sad to find out that Jat youths go around saying “I’m a Jat” and putting other castes down, this is totally wrong, because it seems the protectors are becoming the oppressors. Even in the Punjab this is happening, the true Jat is becoming a mythical creature. If something is not done, the Jat race will become extinct. We will be nobody, we have no identity. In terms of culture and heritage and religion, it is not just Jats, but all castes, even religions and the whole Asian youth community are losing respect for peers, elders and families. They have forgotten where they have come from. Many Punjabi Jats have not been to the Punjab and know nothing of India, religion, culture and tradition. Many can’t even speak Punjabi properly, never mind read it. This is the fault of many parents who are too busy working to pay attention to their child’s upbringing. Jats and Sikhs must remember, they will never become white, so why forget your identity. I admit that Bhangra is very important, because even those who know nothing else about being a Jat and a Punjabi can at least have this connection to their roots and culture. There is one criticism I have to make today, It is acceptable for Jats to do Bhangra, and have Bhangra teams but why are western Jats playing the dhol. This is not part of our past and of being a true Jat. Dhol’s were usually played by other castes, all Jats did was Bhangra. So I don’t understand why Jats have become so involved in Dhol playing instead of Bhangra, even on cartoons, pictures they are becoming associated with an instrument of other castes. I am not criticising other castes or the dhol. Jats are losing their true identity. They are a unique group of people with unique values, who are losing their identity. There is no point being a Jat by name when you know nothing about what it means to be jat. So for my Jat brothers: “As you look to the future, don’t forget the past because without the past the living present becomes futile!“ Once again, before I finish these points of I must state that I am not against other castes. I am a believer of Sikhism, but I also believe we are all similar but different. All men are created equal in the eyes of the lord but every person is an individual different to the next, different groups have different points of view and an individual style all of their own. These differences should not be used to dominate others but remembered, valued and respected. By Rajwinder Singh Gill Lidderawala. Any views on my work positive or negative are welcome. I think the best thing about being a sikh is that our religion does not focus on conversion. It is open to everybody and does not dicredit others. It is religion symbolised by warriors, martyrs and great people who were non judgmental.

Sikh and Sikhism has given a warning to evil and to despots: Be aware because the hunted can become the hunters.

We did not choose this role- it was given to us and is now a part of our identity. Abandoning that role is like asking a vegetarian to give up vegetables.

I think that it is important for all Sikhs to help each other out in business and beyond. In any capacity we can influence change.

I am a Sikh and believe in it, but i follow the teachings of "Radha Soami", which i believe in very much.....!!!! U guys out there should check it out....It is not a religion, caste...etc.......it is a way of thinking & believing...... No matter what the colour, religion, caste of a person, we are all equal to god and will always be equal....!!!

We are given birth here for some reason, being that we are here to reach god, the only way is via Meditation after being initiated by a perfect "Master".....and only will then u be free from th "Churasi Lakh" circle.....!!! Otherwise u will be born again and again into this world, making your karma's heavy...... So do something about it......."Jeeti Jeeti Baazi Na Haaro" "Kal" will make u commit bad things which u will have to pay for.......eventually....!!!! "Sow and u shall reap", do good karma's and u will gain the fruit of it....... I AM A SIKH AND AM PROUD TO BE ONE & ALWAYS WILL BE...!!!

After viewing the comments by sikhs as well non sikhs I was stunned even today-time of global unity-we are living in very dangerous and ignorant world. In a nut shell, I like to write about all this. The Sikhism in assence advocates only the one Supreme Who created the whole world and every thing and every one is under His order. He is birthless, deathless. He can only be realized through the Guru, all we are temporary and He is the Truth. Sikhism further asks to make main goal of this given life to be with Him by remembering His Naam and by living truth and love. One should be caring, giving and tolerant. Since all human beings are one race and all should be treated with respect. Sikhism doesn`t support voilence( as people like Gandhi thought without even studying it or consulting great person like Rabindra Nath Tagore); however, it asks to defend and protect the week.It regards all religions and criticizes only the hypocracy which itself should not be any part any religion. It also advocates equality and freedom of all human beings regardless of their origin or religion. I was also surprised to read what Mr Chuan said about Sikh-Gurus. Let me make it clear to him onething that by reading merely anything cannot make anybody scholar. Guru Nanak and other nine masters just repeated what the first Guru said and Guru Nanak Himself declared"Na ko Hindu na ko Musalman: how anybody can level Him with either of one? Guru Gobind Singh ji said:Ram Raheem,Puraan Quraan anek kahen matt ek na manion" How any body can relate Durga Devi to Him? Actually, to make people understand the Gurus used all the pervailing names related to spirituality, that is it. Please learn how to respect the religions instead of misinterpretting them. I believe, as per Gurbani, it doesn`t mean what faith one belives in since all religions teach ethics to humanity. We should be more civilized today by showing respect to all religions.I met Muslims,Hindus,Bodhis,Jainis,Christians and Jews who are really spiritual and great. When one condemns another religions, his act brings disgrace to humanity. Learn to know how some people time to time exploit religuous feelings resulting in generalization of whole religion or the race. Be smart.I pray for all people out there to be more tolerent towards all people. To Sikhs, please remember Sikh Gurus stood for Muslims and Hindus and Muslims and some Hindus were also stood for Sikh Gurus.{Bheekhan Shah,Todar Mal} The meaning is simple, Sikh Gurus practiced: He is every where and in every body, whom to call bad, He is in all. Wars were fought by Sixth and tenth Masters only against oppression not against Hindus or Muslims. So let us convey a massage of Sikhism: SARBAT DA BHALA. Thanks for reading this. GS

i think that there are a load of brilliant things bout being a sikh but there are also allot of bad things. for example the A.K.J they are very good @ what they do simren but they are very "annoying" in what they say. The say that if gubani hasent got "nanak nam" in it then it hasent been writen by the guru ji's.I think that all these organisations like Babbar Khalsa are separating the sikhi religon far far apart and it is getting very annoying. i dont think that the guru's would want us to get into organisations they would want us all to be 1!!!!

Actually I'm more concerned what it says in the Guru Granth Saib, it's says women and men are equal why aren't the women treated equally why do women sit on the left side at the Gurdwara and men sit on right. Why are we not allowed to marry anybody else than our own cast, as in the Granth Saib says there is no cast. When we get married why does the man get to go first in the lamhe the women behind. Is it necessary to goto the temple if you believe God is everywhere; in your heart, in your soul, and in your surronding. I know we cover our head to goto the temple out of respect but why is it done, for what purpose. As being a Sikh I attend the Gurdwara every Sunday not because I have too, but because it provides peace but I have alot of questons about the relgion.

The Sikh name gives a pride of belonging to such a rich culture, the easy way to come closer to GOD without any rigorous rituals and so called agents of religion

Comments

Ironically, this great culture is on the verge of dissappearence, unless and until the new generation comes forward and try to propagate it amongst the sikhs (another irony) and other religions.

Waheguruji Ka Kahlsa Waheguruji Ki Fateh.

Brothers & Sisters, The coolest thing @ being a Sikh cannot be defined in just a few words. There are so many things that Param Pita Dashmeshji has bestowed on us, that describing one will be to do unjustice ot the other aspects.

The best part however is the identity of a Sikh. " Lakon Jag keena ik thaain, un mein miley ek Sikh Jaain, Jathan Bakan Mein Hans Na Dipey, Jathan Mrigan mein Sher Jyuon Dikhe." A Sikh stands tall & proud, even when the odds are against him, fo rhe knows that he is the only person who has the blessings of his Guru, "Sava lakh se ek ladaaon, tabhay Gobind Singh Naam Kahaon." During the British Raj in India an officer of the Queen was deputed to find out more @ this "Qoum". The officer reported to his commanding officer in a few days & said," Sir, we have picked up a rather dangerous enemy this time. I have seen them pray & in their prayers they ask their Guru's to give them the strenghth to Sacrifice themselves for their country. Sir, we can terrify people who dont wish to die but people ready to die is not our cup of tea. Moreover when ever i have tried to talk to any one of these people they address themselves as "Savalakh Fauj" they call themselves Bhujangi's ( Sons of the King Of Snakes) & they have the guts to look at death in the face. They pray " JEY SUKH DEIN TAAN TUJHEY ARAADHAN!! DUKH BHI TUJHEY THIAAIN!!! JEY BUKH DEIN TAAN IT HI RAAJAAN DUKH MEIN SUKH MANAIN." I think we should not tamper around with these people."

So my friends that is what is the coolest thing. A caste is big only if it has "Shahidi Sarmaya" Numbers of Martyr's. We are the only race who are 5% of the worlds population & our Shahadat is 100%.

I had my hair cut my beard shaven, I did this for the sake of fashion, but I met a Gursikh who had converted him self to this religion & I felt ashamed, I begged for forgiveness at Sachkhand Huzur Sahib Nanded, & my Guru took pity on me & accepted me back in his fold. I am proud to be a sikh & proud to be Guruji's Son.

So all you guy's who shave their heads & beards ( Pop stars, Bhai Daler, Bhai Surinder, Bhai Gurdas Maan & All other bretheren included), learn from the shahadat of Bhai Taru Singhji Shahid who had his scalp shorn off when the tyrants could not cut his hair.

Bhai Mani Singhji Shahid had his body cut to small pieces starting from the joints of his fingers, to preserve the honour of our race. Dhan Dhan Dhan Baba Deep Singhji Shahid fought with his head Placed on his palm to protect the honour of "Harmandar Sahib."

I salute all our Shahids who have made me feel proud that I am born a sikh. & if there is life after life I pray to my Guru, & Akal Purukh, Waheguru please if you want me to be reborn, let me be born as a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singhji.

"Waheguruji Ka Khalsa Wahegruji Ki Fateh."

Your Brother Balbir Singh

Sikhism is the coolest religion since it can show strenght and kindness both in great abundance. Open mindedness and freedom for all. Equal rights and full rights for women.

However, there are aspects of Punjabi people that must change and go against Sikhism. Firstly, we must accept people more freely. A major weakness of India was and is the caste system. India was easily attacked and ruled by others in a cruel way by others that did not have a caste system themsevles but exploited the Hindu caste system. This made India weak. If it was not for the Sikhs there would not be much of modern northern India left.

So why do we still fight over pointless issues of cast and sir names. While we are locked in this crap other religions are expanding and taking on more followers from outside.

Sikh converts are few and far between and that is something that we must change. However, it is often the converts that are the best sikhs! I see so many Punjabis born sikh but do nothing for themslves or to promote the religion.

We must accept others more freely. I would go further and say that we should actively be seeking to recruit others who may be of no faith or disillusioned with their current faith.

I also see so many Sikhs getting married to white people. There is nothing I see wrong with this if it is done correctly. But instead parents immediately disown their children( as they still call them), create massive tension so to make the non sikh in the relationship feel completely worthless and gerally give a very poor introduction to sikhism. I know white people that would have been happy to convert and in fact where very interested in sikhism but the parents of their partner simply made it impossible.

We have to accept the fact the 50% of sikhs live in foreign lands where they are in the minority. We should see this as an advantage and not a weakness. We should make it easier for others to join us and not close the door on them. We need new blood to expand and become stronger. After all we are all converts at some stage (30% muslims and 70% hindu).

In short we have to start to actively market the religion much more, broaden its appeal and be more willing to accept other non sikhs into sikhism by formalising conversions through our institutions.

"Waheguruji Ka Khalsa Waheguruji Ki Fateh!"

"Oho Uthaya Mard Agamda Variam Akela... Wah Wah Gobind Singh Aape Gur Chela!"

What religion in this world says " Sarbat Da Bhala " It is the sikh who asks this boon from his Guru Guru Granth Sahib every day after his Ardas. The Sikh community ought to be proud that we are the lot created by the Sword. That is why a sikh is a "LOH PURUSH" the Baptism of the sword is the reason why u feel a lot of enegy & zeal in you. We should be proud that we were born to save humanity & that we have been successful.

The population of the community is @ 5 % in the entire world but the spirit of Scrifice is 100 % I think our people should start searching their roots & follow the teachings of our Guru Shaib. They should once again turn a new leaf & become the Respected "SANT SIPAHI's" they were made by Dasam Pita Saheb Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji"

The coolest thing @ being a sikh is the way of life. You feel an aura around you. Whereever you go the feeling is that Pita Dashmesh is there watching you, correcting you, & helping you to find the better person in you. I have experienced HIS presence in my self & that has made me feel top of the world. Ofcourse I try to be the Sikh my GURU wants me to be. When I fail i see him reprimanding me & I try to atone for the wrong I have done.

I had shaved off my hair & had taken up all the viles of this world but, He has forgiven me & has allowed me to come back to him, & thanks to his inspiration I am a Gursikh once more.

Well people have different views on being a sikh. But the greatest part is in "Dasam Pita Guru Gobind Singhji" said My Sikh will be like : Jathaan Bakan Mein Hans No Dabe Like a Swan in a flock of Cranes Mrigan Mein Sher Jion Dikhe Like a Lion among Deer."

I Thank my Guru for making me as he wants, & that my friends is the coolest thing of being a Sikh.

A Ardas at my Guruji's Feet " Guruji, please bless ur sikh's so that they may stay RAAZI IN YOUR RAZAA, & may the community rise & shine so that Your teachings may reach each & every human being & may the world live in peace. Gru Nanak Naam Chadhdi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala!"

that is a very good question. What do you think is the coolest thing about being a sikh. As a sikh the coolest thing is that being a sikh teaches you to see the guru or the light of god in everyone irrespective of religion, race, gender etc. It has taught me the to be humble so that i may learn, it teaches patience, but overall it teaches to love everyone, not to have hatered, NO ONE IS A STRANGER, NO ONE IS AN ENEMY EVERYONE I SEE IS A FRIEND

My ability to stand up, look into someone's eye and proudly proclaim I am a Sikh is cool. The word Sikh itself lifts me. Unfortunately, there are still some Sikhs who says they are Jats etc. I was brought up in a society where I did not even know such a thing exist until I was in India 10 years back. Being a student in a foreign land now, I have to be cautious among Sikhs for the fear of being prejudiced just because I'm not in their sub-caste. Fortunately the only Sikh family that I have met in Pitsburgh, PA so far does not prejudice about it although they did ask about my sub-caste. Why should there be sub-caste distinction? Isn't just being Sikhs not good enough?

Comments

Whoseever idea this is, it is a brilliant one. I was feeling suffocated because there really isn't many Sikhs that I have met in US, but now I feel like I'm coming to live again. I did not know I will have the opportunity to "meet" these many Sikhs in a day. Keep up the good work. By the way, is there any organization that can assist international Sikh student who is facing financial difficulties? I will appreciate if you can forward the information or contact details to me. Thank you. WAHE GURU JI KA KHALSA, WAHE GURU JI KI FATEH.

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh. The coolest thing I think is about being a Sikh is that you are easily identified. If a Muslim, a hindu and a sikh with turban walk around in town, the sikh with turban is most easily recognized. The word "sikh" mean "student". Someone who always learns something new and then teaches it to others. I am very proud to be a sikh and to be born in a gursikh/religious family.

So ofcourse, the coolest thing is having a Guru. Guru Guru Gur Karr Mann More, Guru Bina Mein Nahi Hore, Gur Ki Take Raho Din Raat, Jaki Koy Na Maytay Daat, GUr Parmaysar Ayko Jaan.

Im not a Sikh yet, I have untouched Kes, but I trim my beard. I will become I Sikh when I take Amrit and abide by the full Sikh rules. The proudest thing about coming from a Sikh background is the unquestionable courage and sacrifice my ancestors gave to practice their faith and let others practice theirs. I feel embarrased today when I see the 'Modern' Sikhs of today, drinking, taking drugs, only wearing 1 of our 5 K's (KARA), going to pointless gigs where people only go for one reason, and worst of all, claiming to be Sikhs, thus downgrading our image and history in front of the whole world. There is nothing cool about being a sikh! People today have distorted the religion so much that we are no longer sikhs but a cult which originates from hinduism. Guru Nanak want equality, he wanted to get rid of the caste system, yet we have symbols such as 'jats do it' with the khanda. How can this honestly show that their is no caste system. The religion itself was built on the philosophy that their is one god creator of all, yet when we go to the gurdwara the granthis their think they are the personification of god. Sikh were not told not to eat meat, yet when we go to the gurdwara they the tell you that eating meet is against our religion. How do they honestly think the khalsa army won their battles against the moghuls by eating potatoes? Sikhism today is distored and I'm afraid I am not proud to be a seek, neither do I belive that sikhs are cool. The religion itself contardicts, and manipulates the real truth. Sikhism today is just about wearing a t-shirt with a khanda emblem, going to bhangra gigs and going to the gurdwara to check out the local talent. There are no religion aspects in this. GOD IS WITHIN US, NO MATTER WHAT RELIGION YOU ARE. I was born as a sikh and a jat, but these are not the qualities which make me proud of myself, nor do I belive they make me cool

Comments

Religion is only a community you belong to, the most important thing is that you work hard and treat others the way you want to be treated. God is not in the gurdwara nor in notion of praying every day, but god is inside and a part of us.

This religion shows easiest path to meet God and achieve Salvation. Guru Granth Sahib is the only one "Holy Book" that could never be proved wrong by science since other holy books have been proved wrong. This religion gives equality to everyone including women and regarding everybody son/daughter of God.

Waking up every night before the rise of the sun. Showering with cold water to have the mind and body in full alertness. Repeating the Guru's words, repeating God's name as the great sun slowly begins to show itself along the horizon. Sitting in the lotus position, slowly reciting the Lord's name - emptying the mind as much as possible of the five diseases, and attempting, with head covered, to release the energy of the tenth door. Reading the Jap Ji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Chaupe and Anand Sahib and being re-energized. Praying with ardas to my guru, asking to be forever in his presence - asking to forever recite the Lord's name. Beginning my day in Chardi Kala, living every moment of my life - ready to face Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji. Having an open mind towards other faiths, and treating women in my community with equal dignity and respect as the men. Spreading my understanding and knowledge to others, while attempting my best to learn much from them. Welcoming stressful situations, knowing that the Guru is always one step behind, one glance beside and one wish ahead of you, as well as one thought deep within the mind. Honouring the most open-minded, modern, common-sense and functional faith, lifestyle and brother/sisterhood in the world that Sikhism is. Walking on the path less traveled by.

These are the coolest things about being a Sikh.

This is just a comment to Ravinder Singh, who has posted his comment on this thread board... Why do you think that the Sikh religion is eroded? Where does it say in the Guru Granth Sahib that marriage to a person from another religion is prohibited or looked down upon. Clearly, it's not the religion or the sikh teachings, but it's merely the perspective of your family. Sikhism is very open-minded and it doesn't put any other religion beneath ours, in Sikhism, we are taught to respect all. I agree, there are some very narrow minded people who do put our religion down, many of them believe that they are devoutly pious...sometimes, it's the people of a religion that give the religion a bad impression on others and not the religion itself. Moreover, there are other comments on this threadboard/survey that put other religions down, it's people like you who create negativity and start conflict, god is one and you should respect everyone and all other religions. What are you learning from sikhism?? clearly it's the wrong message-now that's propoganda

As in Guru Granth Sahib, No body is bad, only some part of there work is. So people should not be judged because they belong to some other culture or religion, or they have a certain last name that you don't like. Islam is a great religion but only few people are bad, so is sikhism, it is a great religion too but only some bad people sitting in grudwaras make it look bad ************ Sikhism was established on the basis of providing people with the basic right of 1) Freedom to follow any religion (gurus fought to protect hindus) 2) Freedom to protect yourself (right to bear arms, now days its just reduced to carying a blunt kirpan)

Unlike US, in India, right to protect youself is taken away by Govt. Unlike US, in India, people are divided on the basis of what language they speak and their religion.

Now all the Sikhs should fight in India to give these basic rights to all the citizens or move to some place that allready give these rights to their citizens

Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh!

The beauty of our religion is that we respect other's religion. The beauty of our religion is that we respect other people and the beauty of our religion is that we are truly beautiful people. The gurus did not want us hating other people and it is only through the respect that we will begin to understand ourselves, our faith and earn the respect of other people. Sat sri akal!

Comments

I have read other people's comments and I wanted to respond to a few of them. My mother is Sikh (Punjabi) and my father is Catholic (Black). What does that make me? Does that make me a lost child? Does that mean that God loves me any less? Does that mean that he loves my mom more than my dad? Furthermore, what religion does that make me? I wanted to correct a few people and maybe even help them understand. God does not love me any less. What makes a Catholic any better than a Sikh? In my mind, nothing. I am in no way putting down either of the two religions, but I consider them both equal to me. I wear a cross and a khanda around my neck. God is one supreme ultimate being and I know that. Catholics believe that and so do Sikhs. I think before some of you judge, you should think first. Learn more about what you are talking about. That is what I have done and I can live two faiths together as one. It is the same God, faith is the way that you express your love to that one God. How can we hate others because of their faith? "I repeat only the Name of One God who fulfills us, at all places. I utter not another's name, nor establish another God. I dwell upon the Name of the Infinite One and so realize the essence of the Supreme Light. I give thought to none else, nor utter another's name. O God, with Thy one Name I am imbued. I have no other pride. Yea, I utter only Thy Name and eradicate my endless sins." (Guru Gobind Singh, Vachitra Natak) Guru Gobind Singh stresses here the importance of the one true God and I also stress the importance of this. I invite your feed back and comments. I have lived my 19 years thus far under fire for what I have chosen to do and I do not expect that to stop. I know there are other brothers and sisters out there that do understand me and support me. I only hope that we may all come to the understanding that no matter what your religion, it is the same God and because of that, we must respect one another. We are all beautiful children of God. "All are created from the seed of God. There is the same clay in the whole world, the potter (God) makes many kinds of pots." (Guru Amar Das, Bhairo) Now don't you agree?

The coolest thing about being a Sikh are my parents - who were influenced by their faith and values to be such gentle, brave and fair-minded people. Many a elder people who worked so hard for our future were just that and also self respecting individuals.

Having said that, I do not imply that only being a Sikh can cause such people. I am sure we have examples from every other religion and community too. But Sikhism has been a good influence on a whole lot of people for sure.

In these present times, and also reading a few comments in this mail I feel concerned. Some of us seem to have graduated from being self-respecting individuals to egoistic. From 'hardworking, brave people' to those who believe that these qualities are achieved merely by being born as a Sikh.

So many in this survey seem to prove their goodness and greatness, by portraying another religion or community as bad. 'Forget it', I like to tell these people - there is nothing absolute. Our ability to be good and useful comes from the positive energy you have within and it comes from faith, belief and hope - and that is not a monopoly of any one particular religion or people. You continue to hate and see only negatives in others - than you are surely on your way to loosing that energy.

As I understand life - there is nothing absolute. In my opinion it is not correct to shield oneself from the rest of the world's influences under the name of religion. I believe we should have the courage to go out and understand the world with an absolute open mind and then maybe help enrich our own religion. Experiencing life with a positive outlook and having a benevolent disposition, helps us catch the essence of life and in turn understand the values the gurus propounded - and also to throw out the junk and meaningless activities that often starts collecting over time - both in religion and in communities.

Religion can cause the creation of communities - but the journey to share the thoughts of the gurus and saints is an individual journey. All influences are welcome but we should not let any institution or group hijack our personal evolution. The answers may lie in the sacred books but to understand the depth of its meaning lies in our experience as human beings - and not just as 'Sikhs'. And this journey is absolutely free - no one can decide the rules for me or you - but oneself.

The best and coolest thing about being sikh is that the Guru's left their spoken word in scriptures for all the world to follow. The saddest thing is everyone has their own interpretations, i.e. bend the rules because there is no divine authority to say otherwise. The bible was written 50-100 years after jesus died,,very vaque i think. Whereas the direct words of the gurus are there in the guru grant sahib ji.. You can not dispute that... No offense to christians, just using bible as example. Sat Sri Akal Ji to all the followers of the gurus....

Picture this: you're in an unfamiliar place (new country & town) and are looking to meet your own people. You see a turbaned-Sikh and say "Sat-Sri-Akal", and this is the basis of a friendship that spans continents. This really happened. Our unique appearance causes us to be at our best always. Guruji removed those initial barriers that would otherwise prevent free-er interchange amongst our people. I love being a sikh, am proud of my turban, and am always glad to meet fellow sikhs.

The coolest thing being a "Sikh" is Our Differet Identity. You can recognize a "Sikh" From a croud of millions. I just feel so good and proud myself that I'm a "Sikh." Being a Sikh just tells us that why did we name "Sikhs" and Why did our Gurus SACRIFICE Their families and themselves for us. Looking back at our history is just going to tell us that why do we have to proud ourselves being "Sikhs."

I have to let you know that this religion was founded and Guru Gobind Singh told us to have 5 Kakkars, which include Kesh, Kanga, Kaccha, Kadda, Kirpan.

Kesh means Unshorn hair (NOT CUT). Guru Gobind SIngh wanted his Sikhs to have a unique identity and be distinct from rest of them. This was the hukum of the Akal Purukh (GOD). SIkhs should be proud to have turban on their head, uncut beard and rest of the elements required.

People who cut their hair in my opinion are cowards and trying to merge with the crowd. I also had those notions while back, until I took Amrit at Gurudwara on Vaisakhi day on APril 13th. I have all the 5 kakkars with me, and not scared of anyone and feel very proud to be sikh.

I have seen people with cut hair growing back hair forcing their parents with cut hair to grow them back. Come on Sikh, be brave and become puran sikh and see the sacrifices of Matti Daas, Baba Deep SIngh, Band Bahadur, Guru Tegh Bahadur, who fought for a cause and gave their lives but never gave their Religion.

They GAVE THEIR HEADS BUT NEVER THEIR RELIGION. Dont be intimadated by any one and be brave and become sikh (GURU's Chaela, and happiness be with you)...

Gursikh, Harjit SIngh

You guys think you are great. You are talking about other religions, that Hindus are bad and their religion is bad, weren't Sikh's Hindus too? And if you say that religion is not bound to no restriction and shouldn't be prejudiced about other religions, then what are you doing by saying that Hindus are bad and so is their religion. What kind of Humanity is it? I am a gujurati buy i am in love with a sardar and i love him to death, but that doesn't mean that i hate my religion, i believe one should not ever say that my religion is better than yours, here is where the fight begins. Do you know that the 'Guru Granth Sahib' was written with a mixture of the Gita, the Quran, and the Bible, because 'Guru Gobind Singh' found the true meaning of life in all these three things. I am very proud of the religion, Sikhism, because it teaches one the best things in life but i am not proud of the people who have written on this page because they are making a difference between 2 religions. If you think that you guys are strong believers of your religion and the Granth Sahib then the first thing it teaches you is not to harm a living thing. Then why do you all eat meat? Do you think you follow your religion patriotically? I don't think so...

The coolest thing is that all the problems in life are answered, and we should thank the ten Gurus for giving us such rich belief's. Sikhism is the modern, relaxed religion in the world that teaches the highest truth. While Islam says their's is the only way and Christianity say that their's is. Only the Sikh religion can answer this question as Guru Nankak said: The true religion to God is God's path. Others may agree or disagree but we the Sikh's know that our Satguru is right, just like they were right about the role of women, that's why we have no problems in Gurdwara'a about women leading services! It is only now that on most job application forms it states: we do not discrimnate against race, gender, religion ect. The funney thing is that Guru Nankak said all this about 500 years ago! I think people should wake up and learn about the Sikh religion, as they may learn something and only good can ever come out of being a Sikh!!!!!

The coolest thing about being a sikh.....everything is cool about a Sikh. We are a Universal Faith. Our gurus taught us modern ideas that are being accepted by people from other faiths as well. We're not trying to force anybody to become a Sikh. We have a wicked religion but some people just don't realize it. They think it's gay to wear a turban and stuff but they should think about the sacrifices that our gurus and ordinary Sikhs gave to perserve our religion. You should be ashamed!! Guru Gobind Singh Ji sacrificed his four sons, his father and his mother to save our religion so that the ungrateful Sikhs of today could have a life!! Can't you be grateful for that?!

The coolest thing about sikhism is it's acceptance for all other religons. In the Quran, in it's thirty chapters nowhere does it say that a hindu or a sikh can go to heaven. In the ramyana, in it's 18 chapters nowhere does it say that a muslim or a sikh can go to heaven, but in the Guru Granth Sahib no where does it say that a muslim or a hindu can't go to heaven. NO other holy book has the writing of a saint that is of a different religion, but the Guru Granth Sahib is full of them, such people like Bhai Ravi Das, Kabir ji etc. Many other religions practice non violence, so those religions could be wipe off the face of this earth, but sikhism teaches to stand up for your self and the order given to us by Guru Gobing Singh to wear a shaster(weapon) at all times enabled this fabulous religion to keep it's head high through all of it's difficulties. The Moghul raj is finished, all the emperors that wanted to destroy sikhism are finished, but sikhism still lives today as the most distinct religion witha ll of there hairs intact.

3 things that are the definition of life and since religon is supposed to show us the way then the definition of religon you could say, but how many religons actually say this and of the few how many preach it

1. Do you believe that we all come from the same place YES then you get 33% NO then no percentage given

2. If we all come from the same place does that mean the we are equal YES 33% NO 0%

3. If we all come from the same place does that mean that you will treat me and everyone that you meet as an equal whether the person is black, white, hindu, jew, beggar, king, male, female

Yes 33% NO 0%

so if you have answered yes to the above then you have 99%

then final question is

4. does your religon ....

YES 1% no 0%

if you scored 100% then you belive in a way of life that can be most closley associated with only one religon, as far as I know and that is Sikhism!!!!!!!!!!!!

isnt it a great way to live life

thats the coolest thing about sikism ACCEPTANCE through free choice cause you are not born a sikh you find your own path.

the individuality and instant recognization that sikhs receive is amazing. When walking down the street, you can easily recognize a sikh with a turban, and often get aknowledged as a mark of respect. However if there is an sikh (with a haircut), you dont know whether he is sikh, muslim, hindu, or BENGALI ETC.

I am a Sikh, and I try to practice the religion whenever I have the time. I have to admit its not as often as I would like it to be. I know the history and I know what you have to do to become a true full Sikh. In my opinion people can say "Oh yeah, Sikhism is so cool because...blah blah...i like the name "lion" or I love being different from the rest of the world." Being different is a very small part of the religion. Again, I am not an expert on this, but I believe there is more to Sikhism than just being different. I am very proud to be Sikh, but then there have been times when I despised it. I hated being different from everybody else. It was hard for a person to accepted by others. Most of us probably wont admit it. It was hard for me to be something that nobody else understood. I was the only Sikh in 4th-12th grade. It was hard. It was hard for me to explain to everybody that called me Hindu what I really was. Of course now, I am proud of who I am. I am proud to be Sikh, but it has been hard. I just wish maybe others were more informed about Sikhism, so my kids will not have to go through the same thing I had to go through. Or I wish my parents had raised me to be a stronger person. Either way, I know I survived because of the strong values and morals that have been set because of my religion.

Wearing the turban is the coolest thing because it's cool. I'am 14 years old and i go to the Catholic school .Most people ask me that,"Why do you go to the Catholic school for" and i said that if you go to a public schools, students of that school always trying to put you down.I know now you will ask me don't you get picked in that catholic school. No, i don't get picked because these school have more stricked rules than the public schools. When i was in grade 8,i went to the public school and i didn't liked it.So that's why i came in this catholic high school. Some people think that catholic schools don't except non-catholic. You are wrong because i go to a catholic schooland they excepted me and i wear a turban and I'am the only turbaned sikh and a sikh in this school. The school that i go to is "James Cardinal Mcguigan High School". And I'am a amrit thary sikh.

We take muddy shes of all with no descrimination, we serve langar to anyone & everyone. even the great Emperor Akbar sat in the same pangat & had langar.Thirdly the 3 golden rules, all the 3 are very essential for a good human being. fourthly our melodious Baani & Path. Thier isn't just one coolest thing about being a Sikh. Everything is cool in being a Sikh.

The coolest thing about being a Sikh isn't that your recognised by a crowd but is much larger than that, its about how it makes you feel from the inside. The feeling that Guruji, is there with, when you need to talk Guruji is their listening. All this seems incredibly selfish, but its true. When I first turned to Sikhi, I realised that really no one sticks by you, and suddenly you stand alone,, but the only thing that keeps you going is Guruji's kirpa. That is it, that is the coolest thing, as you would say about being a Sikh, the fact that no matter where you go, and what you do the Guru is with you. Its the love, the unconditional love, that which which greater than a mother, a father, a brother or sister. Unfortunately the painful thing is that you realise that at times you can't return that kind of love.

Comments

In Sikhi, we have no Jatha, the purpose of the Khalsa was to unite us, not to divide us, so that over a half of us just can't get on. This isn't what its about. And to all you idiots out there that believe in this so called caste system it just DOES NOT exist, so GET OVER IT. NO offence.

Sikhism's tolerance of other belief systems is unparalleled - many of the tenets of democratic liberalism that form the foundations of the UN charter (freedom of expression, belief, the equality of all people, the prohibition of discrimination on basis of gender, class, religions etc.) were anticipated by the Sikh gurus hundreds of years ago.

Also the way we are taught not to start trouble, but to be peaceful and when need be, to fight for what we believe in. I am really proud to be a sikh!

We all have parts of us that we can improve so lets not judge other people but lets see what we, ourselves can do to become better sikhs.

My views are stated in my poem;

Khalsa is a baptised learner of God, Martyr Gobind's pure religious squad,

Formed to radicate caste anarchy, To abolish mankind inequality,

Khalsa is like a Royal Celebrity, Under the 'spot light' humble and witty,

Five K's for proud uniform identity, Guides the way of life for superiority,

Worship Holy Granth, Guru's request, Pray Thee for humankind, East or West,

Bow head to Gobind the Great, Proud to be a Singh, what a good fate.

I am sikh but i donot think anyone to do anything to be sikh.our Guru saidor saying god is one so it is not important to be sikh, hindu, or muslem. just belive in god and speak truth and see in every god or every god's picture and think god is one. we donot need to say that we are sikh, hindu or muslem just we have to say we are nothing just we all send by god and we have to do that our god send us to do. i love all the people that god made. i think everyone is same that means not that i am not going to gurdwara. everyone have a gurdwara in tham hearts. find god in that gurdwara and love with everyone and do what god saying listen him and read by any religion book. all the books saying same things because god is one and not in any book god saying be sikh or hindu or muslem. all books saying Speak truth, help everyone, love everyone, remember god whenever you can. we are one god's children, who love us lot and always think about us and help us he needs just one thing that's love. i don't said don't belive in god you can call him with any name bahaguru, alha, shiva, jesus.. and lot of names that we called him in love. god is one but we took his diffrent name and just fighting for him when he's one. i don't want to take his new name because i don't want if people going to fight for him by his new name. i love god and he always live in my heart. he loves me lot and i love him too. satshri akal, namasta, albeda, good luck...sorry god if i wrote any thing wrong about you.

In my College days , if somebody abuses me I reciprocate the message by abusing him. Then I came in contact with the Guru Granth Sahib ji through "Guru's Congregation, I felt the etiquettes and respect for human values are very important. After some time I got a job in the DCM Engg. Products. The IndoSwissians , who control the CAM section are very jealous of us because we passed out from a Govt. Polytechnic. Somebody created the misunderstanding between me & Manjinder(Indoswissian) who was very close to me. He called me in his office. In front of the workers he abused me in such a great manner, that I felt myself totally humiliated. But my guru's teachings saved me on that moment. The Shabad echoed in my ears "FARIDA BURE DA BHALA KAR, GUSSA MAN NA HANDAE, DEHI ROG NA LAGAEE, PALLE SAB KICH PAYE" "FARIDA JE TAIN MARAN MUKKIAN TENAN NAN MARE GHUMN, APPANDA GHAR JAIKE PAIR TINNAN DE CHUMN" My eyes were wet. I smiled and came to my department and finally reported to personal department.

ONE CANNOT CONTROL HIS SEXUAL DESIRE, ANGER, GREED, EGO, ATTACHMENT WITH MAYA UNTIL HE MEDITATES ON THE NAAM (WAHEGURU) IN THE AMBROSIAL HOURS AND PASS HIS LIFE ACCORDING TO GURUBANI.

Because it preaches oneness of God. It defines God in the most comprehensible and sensible way taking the mystery out of it that most other religions have tried to promote. It is emphsiszing the equality of all men ( human race, including women). It has grown to be among the top 10 religions in the world in a short span of couple of centuries. It teaches us to stand up for our rights and not to submitt to oppression of any kind. it teaches us to be honest and truthful about our actions. It is professing the kind of discipline of body and mind that is rare to find. I am very proud to be a sikh and equally proud of the teachings of all the gurus enshrined in Shri Guru Granth Saheb to last until the time immemorial. It is an everlasting gift preserved in its originality, let's cherish it.

Comments

There is an urgent need to look at Sikhism in a more global spectrum. It is no longer bound within the territories of the 500 year old India. The fundamentals of sikhism - oneness of god, equality among all children of god, prservation of human dignity, safeguarding self respect etc. must be maintained. Any self crticism should only be to refine ouselves and make us better, without blaming other religions, societies and cultures. After all Guru Nanak preached sarbat da bhala. We say it everyday in our prayers , but we need to practice it too. A sikh is Sant Sipahi, but he should also be a law abiding citizen. Our Gurdwaras need to establish scholarships to promote sikh students to actively integrate into journalism, police, army, navy, air-force, and other local and provincial and federal civilian positions. Our Gurdwaras need to explore and create more cultural and community oriented services to strengthen sikh beliefs by providing certain services in others than Punjabi language also.

Well coolest... I think being a sikh is the coolest of all,I dont know about others though. When I tie a turban and look in the mirror,I'm filled with such pride. Bearing such an historical background- the unprecedented sacrifices, the simplicity of the faith itself, ant the way it covers all the aspects in life, its physical and spiritual uniqueness and much much more. But talking about coolness; I think tying a turban is the coolest and having long hair!

SIKHISM IS THAT WHERE ROTI BECOMES 'PARSHADA' AND PANI BECOMES 'JAL'. THE QUESTION IS NOT CHANGING NAMES CHANGE IT'S TASTE AS WELL, BUT THE FACT IS TO BRING "NIMARATA" AND "SEWA" IN YOUR WORK. IF YOU ARE ALWAYS DOING "SIMRAN" AND BELIEVE THAT WHATEVER IS HAPPENING IS HAPPENING BY ITSELF THEN YOU ARE THE HAPPIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. THIS MEDITATION (SIMRAN WHILE WORKING, EATING, SLEEPING OR WHATEVER DOING) IS GIVEN BY SIKHISM AND WE ALL SHOULD ADOPT IT TO ENJOY "ANAND".

I am ashamed to have such people like Pardeep Virdi in this religion. We had examples in history of the way Sikhs respected other religions and respected the people. But Pardeep has said "Sikh will live,Hindu,Muslim will die" and I hated what he said.FCome on folks it is noce that we are sikh but it is nicer that we are Indians and India is a nation of Hindus,Muslims,Christians,Buddhists,Jains..apart from sikhs and we should learn to respect them all.Jai Hind.Sat Sri Akal.

The fact that the Sikh community have made their mark ,globally, in just Three Hundred (and one) years since the formation of the Khalsa Panth. From the historic aspect of battling against the Moghul Empire to the contributions of Sikhs in the disposal of the British administration from Colonised India......to to their contributions to Asian culture, music, commerce, academia and small communities.....perhaps due to the (traditional) appearance of a Sikh (male or female) , a Sikh is recognisable almost anywhere in any activity.....a Sikh, wearing a Turban, will always "stand out" from the crowd........RAJ KAREGA KHALSA..

Being a Sikh is truly an honor. Guru Nanak Ji has given us the most precious gift on earth. And that's his true wisdom. To think we practice a religion that was far beyond its time is amazing. Only Guru Nanak taught equality among all. Being a Sikh means respecting yourself and others. Working hard and judging noone. Keeping God with you where ever you go!!!

Comments

Unfortunatley not many practice "True Sikhism". I don't think this is how Guru Nanak wanted it to be. It's very important to educate ourselves and others. We need to stop getting caught up in "whose right, whose wrong" or, whose better. There is only one right and that is the Guru Granth Sabih. It's a simple philosophy, why are we making it so difficult. We need to unite and take steps forward not backwards or we might as well be Hindus!!!

Everything about being a Sikh is great, you can't pin it down or even try to mention a few of the elements, because you won't do it justice. But i'd like to take this opportunity to make a few points: 1. the rude and insulting comments that made this site were (unfortunately) probably done by punjabi lads who are going through adolescence and need to exert their emotional tension in some way. Don't take it too much to heart everybody, although it's probably better if the site does not publish these anymore. 2. Anybody wishing to insult the sikh religion should stop and take stock of what they are doing. You probably think you are really hard and no doubt i will receive loads of hate-mail and threatening letters now, but just think -every person goes through a weak point, usually at death, and this is when you will realise what you are doing is going to cost you in the future. 3. To anybody out there that likes to threaten non-sikhs etc., you are right to question the practices of other so-called sikhs, but take it easy. We should try to be more humble and impose strategy rather than out-and-out violence against these people. 4. To anyone who questions the integrity of Sant Bhiderawale, (and other separatists), you may not have agreed with him, but show some common sense. Sant Ji awoke the sikh community worldwide, and if only we had had a leader in the past 15 years to match him, we would not be where we are today. 5. A note to other people who argue that Sikhi does not have to be uncut hair and refraining from alcohol and drugs, but should be about the inside. I commend that you can say Sikhi is of the inside, but obviously you don't understand this, otherwise you would know why we should do certain things like not drink alcohol. 6. To all punjabi lads out there...please don't leave messages to 'all girls out there'. Thats just downright embarrassing for the rest of us Sikhs.

First of all, I would like to say that a lot of these comments that these people wrote is a disgrace to our Sikh community. Who do these people think they are? How dare someone say that they are proud to be a Sikh when they don't even know what it is?! First of all, some people wrote that they are Sikh and they have the nerve to say that they are jatt, or whatnot. Our gurus taught us to abolish the cast system and not label ourselves and others under certain castes. We also are supposed to have respect for other religions, yes, even Muslims. When I was a freshman in college, my roomate was an Indian muslim. She covers, and to this day I still talk to her and have great respect for her and her religion. I am currently living with another Muslim girl and a Christian. We are the best of friends and we can talk about religion for hours. We have respect for each other. I tell them that our Gurus taught us to respect other religions. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji themselves had great respect for Islam. When they went on their travels around India, they traveled with a Muslim companion. Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji was given shelter by a Muslim family, and they graced this family with a gift, the sacred Ganga Sagar. The Gurus knew that all religions were based around the truth, that there is but one God. God didn't tell the Mughals to butcher innocent people. Islam is not to blame for what ignorant people do. And Sikhism should also not be blamed for what so called Sikhs did to innocent civilians not even 100 years after the Khalsa Panth was formed. People should watch what they say. We should have respect for others, only then can we gain the respect we complain we don't have. I thank Waheguru everyday that I found the way. Yes, I was born into this religion, but I had to find the truth for myself. I learned about the great Martyrs, the shaheeds, from the beginning of Sikhism, to Udham Singh, Bhagat Singh, Bhindrawale, and especially Ajit and Jujhar, two young men I have some much respect for. I love reading about our history. I feel that this is the way for me. If anyon would lioke to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me, I would love to talk to some fellow Sikhs. Waheguru Ji ka Kalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Well, this is a tough question, only because there a so many amazing attributes to Sikhism, but the one answer that comes to mind is a feeling of understanding! Understanding in context of who we are, why we are here, and even the role of religion in general. I think it is the universality of Sikhi that allows us to understand these questions and many more.
