Guru Granth Universals: Challenges & Opportunities to Operationalize in North America

By Dr. Harbans Lal

Abstract

Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) text prophesied that Sikhi, the Wisdom of Guru, would enlighten all corners of the world. Since that prophesy the Sikh diaspora have taken roots outside Punjab, especially in the West, but Sikhi has not been experienced in the new lands. In contrast, the other religions from the East – Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sufism are making impact on the West.

What impeded Sikhi from making inroads is the dearth of operationalization of the path shown in the hymns of SGGS. What is urged is that our scholars in religion, sociology, psychology, economics, sciences, and public relations seek guidance from SGGS to freshly outline operationalize Sikh Universals. They highlight values that best serve civil societies. For example, Guru’s prime “mantra” of Naam – Daan – Isnaan. Through Naam the civil society will live the Truth of Ek Onkaar, the one reality manifested in all creations, by loving and caring for one another. Daan will guide us to seek divine wisdom in our daily life, and share through altruistic practices and ventures. And Isnaan will engage humanity in acts that continually cleanse our minds and bodies.

These human values will draw attention of the west towards Sikhi. Besides these examples, there are many treasures of wisdom to provide the bases of our universal values.
